Data Center: Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly

The temperature of the sea has an average pattern. From year to year, the same place in the ocean will tend to have about the same temperature. A long term average shows basic patterns in ocean temperature trends. Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly is the difference between those large consistent trends and the current conditions. Many things can cause the sea to be cooler or warmer than normal (anomalously cool or warm), from changes in surface wind patterns to subtle variations in global ocean circulation patterns
